The Facilities Management Division invites applications for the position of Practitioner I: Fire Marshal. This role is responsible for implementing and maintaining fire safety protocols to ensure the protection of life and property within the institution. The successful candidate will conduct regular fire risk assessments, lead emergency evacuations, and ensure strict compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and relevant South African fire safety standards.

Fire Safety & Risk Management:  

Conduct scheduled and ad hoc fire risk assessments.   Identify, document, and mitigate potential fire hazards.   Ensure fire extinguishers, alarms, sprinklers, and signage are maintained and inspected regularly.   Monitor and enforce the safe storage and use of flammable materials.   Liaise with facilities or maintenance teams to address fire safety concerns.  

Emergency Preparedness & Response:  

Lead building evacuations during fire drills and actual fire incidents.   Assist in the development and periodic review of emergency response and evacuation plans.   Coordinate with emergency services (e.g., fire department) during incidents.   Maintain and monitor assembly point protocols and signage.   Ensure that fire marshals and floor wardens are briefed and coordinated.

Training & Awareness:  

Ensure compliance with relevant legislation such as OHSA and SANS 10400-T.   Maintain logs of fire safety inspections, drills, training, and incidents.   Compile regular reports for Health & Safety Committees or senior management.   Keep documentation ready for audit or inspection by regulatory authorities.   Investigate and report fire incidents or near-misses, proposing corrective actions.  

General Support & Administration and Continuous Improvement:  

Provide general support to the Health & Safety or Facilities teams as required.   Maintain accurate records of fire safety activities, including training attendance, inspection logs, incident reports, and compliance documents.   Assist with the preparation of reports, presentations, and submissions for audits, inspections, and safety committees.   Stay informed about updates to fire safety legislation, standards, and best practices, and contribute to their implementation.   Perform administrative tasks related to fire safety coordination.   Carry out ad hoc duties as assigned by Management.

Minimum requirements

National Diploma (NQF 6) in Fire Technology or equivalent. Fire Marshal / Fire Warden Training Certificate. Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Certification. 3 to 5 years’ experience in fire safety, emergency response, or a related health & safety role. 3 to 5 years’ proven experience conducting fire drills, inspections, and managing emergency situations. Computer literacy in MS Office 365

Strong understanding of fire prevention strategies and equipment handling. Ability to conduct and document risk assessments and implement corrective measures. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work under pressure during emergencies. Ability to prioritise work, handle conflict, and work independently or as part of a team. Physical ability to walk, climb stairs, and access confined or elevated spaces for inspections.

First Aid Level 3 is advantageous. Sound understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and relevant fire safety regulations in South Africa.   Working knowledge of SANS 10400-T: Fire Protection and related building regulations. Familiarity with the maintenance and use of fire safety equipment (extinguishers, alarms, sprinklers, etc.).  Ability to interpret safety policies, risk assessments, and evacuation plans.
