Job Summary: News24 seeks a digitally adept production editor with a keen eye for quality and a deep-rooted passion for journalism to join our shared business team in either Cape Town or Johannesburg. This role involves managing all English-language business content during the PM shift (12:00-20:00), ensuring accuracy, fairness, and editorial excellence. The production editor will oversee content mix, publication schedule, and distribution of business content, leveraging a robust understanding of analytics and editorial acumen to maximize reach and engagement.
Duties & Responsibilities: - Serve as the editorial gatekeeper for News24 business content during the PM shift (12:00–20:00). - Sub-edit and enrich incoming business copy, focusing on language accuracy, factual integrity, and fairness before publication. - Oversee the balance and relevance of the News24 business content mix. - Manage the publishing schedule and distribution of business content, utilizing editorial judgment on timing, context, and reach to enhance audience impact. - Employ analytics to inform editorial decisions, utilizing site performance data to determine publication timing and story positioning for optimal engagement. - Edit and publish content under tight deadlines, maintaining high standards of quality and ethics, including preparing content for the morning audience. - Collaborate with CMS, social media, and AI platforms to publish, distribute, and promote business content across digital channels. - Assist the business editor in ensuring timely, fresh, and appropriately ranked content publication. - Work independently on weekends and public holidays when necessary.
Skills & Competencies: - Passionate about business news with a talent for story packaging and strong communication skills. - In-depth knowledge of the South African Press Code and proven ability to gatekeep content to meet editorial, ethical, and legal standards. - Strong grasp of business news and news management with the ability to identify content that appeals to the News24 audience. - Excellent attention to detail, with strong writing, rewriting, and sub-editing skills, and a flair for crafting headlines. - Ability to identify and utilize the best visual and multimedia elements to enhance content. - Familiarity with local and international business news. - Capability to perform under pressure, meet short deadlines, and manage long-term projects. - Versatile, flexible, and adaptable to change. - Basic knowledge of CMS systems.
Minimum Requirements: - Relevant tertiary qualification with at least seven years of experience in journalism. - Proven editorial experience in business or production journalism, with a track record of editing high-quality copy under tight deadlines. - Excellent digital, writing, editing, and news judgement skills. - Strong knowledge of the South African business landscape and economy. - Experience with CMS systems, site management, analytics, social media, and AI platforms. - Ability to edit and publish content under pressure and within strict deadlines without compromising on quality or ethics. - Availability to work the night shift, publish content, and prepare for the morning audience.
