Job Description

The successful incumbent would be responsible for facilitation of teaching, learning and assessment activities for undergraduate medical rescue and emergency medical care students including supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate research.


Responsibilities

Facilitating teaching, learning and assessment activities for undergraduate emergency medical care and rescue students focusing on Physical Preparedness, Technical Rope Rescue, Swift Water Rescue, Wilderness and Helicopter Rescue, Structural Collapse, Trench, Hazardous Materials and Confined space Rescue. Participate in and facilitate practical outings and simulated rescue learning events, including the mentoring of students in medical rescue and clinical learning contexts. Participate in national and international deployments for disaster responses. Facilitation of medical rescue short learning programmes, including the development and refinement of online course materials. Organize and participate in physical fitness and swimming training including the conducting of related assessments.

Minimum requirements

Current registration as an Emergency Care Practitioner with the HPCSA and; A Master’s degree in Emergency Medical Care or an appropriate professional qualification (NQF 9) in the field of Emergency Medical Care*. A minimum of five (5) years’ experience teaching medical rescue at the higher education level. A valid Code B driver’s license with professional driver permit. A valid Category R skipper’s Licence. Overhead crane and forklift operator licences. Must be able to pass departmental physical fitness and swimming assessments. Candidates who meet all the requirements and are already registered for an appropriate Masters degree may be considered. If they are the successful incumbent, they will be required to compete the qualification within a two-year period. Successful incumbents (without a PhD qualification) will be required to commit to register for their PhD post completion of their Masters.


Recommendations

Experience in the teaching of swimming skills. Knowledge of faculty and academic policies, rules, and regulations. Expertise in relevant approaches and models, analytical techniques, and methods. Experience with online and or remote learning platforms. National or International experience in deployments for disaster response and related rescue relief with helicopter rescue operations.


Competencies and Behavioural Attributes

Good interpersonal skills as well as the ability to interact with colleagues. Excellent planning and organizational skills. Enthusiastic, tenacious and have a passion for rescue work and teaching.
