The Podiatry Department, situated within the Faculty of Health Sciences, invites applications for the position of Lecturer/Clinician from suitably qualified and registered Podiatrists. The successful candidate will contribute meaningfully to teaching and learning, clinical supervision, community engagement, and Continuing Professional Development (CPD), aligned with the University’s vision, mission, and strategic goals. The New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) is a Department of Higher Education and Training nationally funded programme that involves recruiting a new cohort of young academics. The programme is transformative in nature, and priority is given to designated candidates. Candidates must be 40 years and younger. The programme enables nGAP appointments to benefit from teaching and research development opportunities and requires the incumbent to register for their PhD or Postdoctoral studies. Apart from undergraduate teaching and clinical supervision, the appointee will be expected to actively conduct research, supervise postgraduate students, and be involved in the other activities of the Department.


Responsibilities

In line with the Department of Higher Education and Training's New Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP)1, the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Johannesburg is seeking to make an appointment of a Lecturer in the Department of Podiatry. We are seeking an exceptionally motivated, qualified, and ambitious academic to contribute to and expand the faculty’s current teaching and research interests/specialisations.

The successful candidate will be expected to contribute meaningfully to departmental projects and teach undergraduate and graduate modules in the Department of Podiatry. The successful candidate should demonstrate an eagerness to participate in changing the South African landscape through education. In particular, the incumbent will be expected to:

Obtain a PhD in the required field, if not already held. Prepare and deliver lectures for undergraduate and postgraduate students. Prepare and conduct practical sessions for the students. Clinical supervision of undergraduate students within the Department of Podiatry. Prepare and mark assignments, tests, and exams. Assist with developing course material for undergraduate modules. Must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and productive research, and play a leading role in teaching innovation, including the use of online tools. Be actively involved in core activities of the department, such as teaching, research, academic administration, short-course development, marketing, and community projects. Prepare and publish peer-reviewed papers in accredited scientific and/or academic journals and deliver papers at national and international conferences. Actively conduct research. Supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students. Actively involved in core activities of the department such as academic administration, course development, research supervision, and community-related projects.

Minimum requirements

A Master's qualification (NQF 9) in Health Sciences with a 70% average pass mark. Must have teaching (and/or tutoring or clinical supervision) experience. Strong commitment to good teaching, clinical supervision and research. Minimum of two (2) years of experience in clinical practice as a Podiatrist. Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as a Podiatrist. Evidence of community and/or industrial involvement would be beneficial.


Recommendations

A PhD qualification (NQF 10) in Podiatry or PhD candidate. Teaching or tutoring experience. Experience in clinical supervision of students. Demonstrated ability/experience to work with a multidisciplinary team. Experience in public sector podiatry. Ability to perform teaching, research, and administration simultaneously. Driver's license (EB).

Demonstrated excellence in podiatry clinical skills. Excellent written and verbal English communication skills. Good planning and organisational skills. Enthusiasm and passion for education, clinical supervision, research, and community engagement. Strong interpersonal relationships as well as the ability to collaborate with colleagues. Evidence of professional development. Strong time-management skills, with the ability to work efficiently under pressure.
