The Community Engagement Department is now seeking qualified candidates to join its ranks. This position is intended to provide academic leadership that interlinks teaching, research, and community engagement.


Main Objectives

  1. The primary focus is on enhancing institutional external engagement through Community-Based Participatory Research, accelerating the impact and quality of Engaged Research initiatives, and fostering strategic partnerships between the university and local community organizations in Makhanda. Additionally, the role involves developing an Engaged Research course for Rhodes University students, staff, and local community partners, supporting faculty in innovative engagement strategies, and establishing monitoring and evaluation frameworks for engaged research. The incumbent will also promote the Knowledge for Change (K4C) initiative.

  2. The second objective entails contributing to Community Engagement scholarship through the RUCE Editorial Team of the African Journal of Higher Education, generating community engagement knowledge via publications, scholarly papers, and conference presentations.

  3. The third objective requires coordinating a Community Engagement programme, promoting an asset-based approach to community engagement at Rhodes University, and participating in the strategic management and oversight of the program’s development, implementation, and monitoring.

The Requirements


Lecturer - Master's in a relevant discipline, ideally in Humanities or Social Science (must be prepared to register for a PhD) - Experience in Community Development and Community Engagement (partnership development, Service Learning, Volunteerism, and Engaged Research) - Required experience in tutoring, facilitation, or conference presentations - Proficiency in conducting Community-Based Participatory Research - Ability to teach diverse groups within the university and community - Some administrative experience, preferably in informal settings (e.g., student or sports clubs), and relevant work experience


Senior Lecturer - At least a PhD in a relevant discipline, preferably in Humanities or Social Science - Teaching experience at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels - Experience in Community Development and Community Engagement (partnership development, Service Learning, Volunteerism, and Engaged Research) - Research supervision at the level of at least a Master's degree - Emerging national profile in the discipline - Track record of administration, management, and/or leadership roles
