Description

As an academic within the Academy of Computer Science and Software Engineering you will be required to undertake a variety of teaching and learning, research, and administrative duties to help the Academy, Faculty, and University meet its key performance indicators in pursuit of their respective missions.


Responsibilities

Overall: To perform academic, research, and associated administration activities in the department Teaching and Learning: As per allocated timetable and required additional time for preparation Research: All activities related research conducted in the department with a specific emphasis on quality publications. Administrative: All related administration to teaching and learning and research, wherever appropriate Community Engagement: Ensure involvement for the betterment of the institution and community. Some time may be allocated to this in consultation with HOD on a case by case basis. Personal Development: Continuously develop oneself in the scientific field.

Minimum requirements


A Doctoral Degree in Computer Science or Information Technology with a preference for specialisation in one of the following fields

Cyber Security. Artificial IntelligenceĀ  Having a proven track record of international, peer-reviewed, accredited published research outputs exceeding 1.5 Department of Higher Education and Training research publication units annually in the above field over at least 3 years. The successful applicant must have a proven track record as main supervisor of Master’s degrees supervised to completion. The successful applicant must have an excellent academic record in both Teaching and Learning as well as Research. Must have successfully contributed to projects days (within the Academy the Annual Projects Day is a showcase of senior student practical software development projects – approximately 60 projects annually). Must have a record of successfully offering undergraduate modules over a wide range of the body of knowledge pertinent in the field of discourse. Must have successfully mentored and assessed the marking of third year practical year projects on a level acceptable to the British Computer Society. Must have experience of the BCS accreditation process or equivalent academic certification processes. Must pass a practical programming assessment as determined by the Academy of Computer Science and Software Engineering.


Competencies and Behavioural Attributes

The proven ability to teach both Computer Science and Informatics courses, advanced data structures on an undergraduate level using programming languages used within the Academy. The proven ability to teach both Computer Science and Informatics courses on an Honours (4th year) level. The ability to teach effectively in English is a prerequisite. Should English not be the home language a certification of competence in English will be required. Sufficient lecturing experience with professionally evaluated outcomes. Exposure to TurnitIn for checking the integrity of research assignments. Experience of managing the auditing of all answer scripts for all examinations of both Computer Science and Informatics on both undergraduate and postgraduate level is a strong recommendation. The proven ability to supervise both doctoral and master’s studies as main supervisor to completion. The ability to successfully supervise at minimum 10 honours research projects, according to the standards of the BCS. Must supply proof of formal evaluation, including student evaluation, as a successful teacher/lecturer by an academic institution. Must have proof of a good class pass rate in undergraduate courses The above competencies may additionally be assessed via live lectures and programming ability assessments.


Recommendations

Membership of the BCS is a strong recommendation. At least 5 years experience of organizing and managing student assistants and tutors for both Computer Science and Informatics is a strong recommendation. Having a strong media presence as well as engaging actively in the popularization of science. NRF rating highly desirable (or of an equivalent internationally accepted standing covering the same criteria as the NRF system). Co-supervision of a doctoral student to completion is a strong recommendation.
