Dis-Chem Pharmacies Limited is currently seeking a Pharmacist in East London. The successful candidate will be responsible for the dispensation of medications, providing expert pharmaceutical advice to patients and healthcare professionals, and ensuring the safe and effective use of prescription medications.


Minimum Requirements: Essential: Matric/Grade 12 diploma, Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm) or equivalent qualification, registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC), minimum 2-3 years of experience in pharmaceutical practice, including at least 2-3 years in retail pharmacy settings. Proficiency in computer literacy using MS Office. Advantageous: Relevant retail or FMCG experience, third additional language, SAP experience, E-scripting experience, registered tutor, or Unisolv experience.


Duties and Responsibilities


  1. Dispensing of Medication: Accurately interpret prescriptions under direct supervision, ensuring professional and responsible handling in compliance with South African Pharmaceutical Council guidelines. Capture script details, verify patient information, and ensure accurate picking, packing, labeling, and checking of medications. Monitor common dosages and potential drug interactions. Provide patients with precise instructions on medication usage and potential side effects.

  2. Customer Service: Provide dispensary, self-medication counter, and front-shop assistance to patients. Follow up with patients regarding script tracking reports as required by the dispensary manager and schedule appointments. Explain all medical aid costs to patients.

  3. Administration: Process necessary paperwork for the accurate submission of claims to medical aids. Correct any errors on scripts rejected by medical aids. Maintain customer profiles within the system, merging local and Vexall profiles as necessary. Document and address any messages on customer profiles, taking appropriate action.

  4. Stock Control: Report low/out-of-stock levels and stock errors to the dispensary manager. Assist with bi-annual stock takes and exercise stock, cash, and asset control.

Competencies: Essential: In-depth knowledge of medicine, common dosing regimes, interactions, and counseling for appropriate and effective treatment outcomes. Understanding of retail pharmacy operations. Ability to critically think, excellent communication skills for guiding patients on medication usage and side effects, and the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. English and a second language – read, write, and speak. Ability to identify potential issues and determine when to escalate the problem, as well as the level of escalation. Acts as a role model for high standards and quality. Demonstrates drive to ensure quality is not compromised. Possesses time management skills, meeting deadlines, and the ability to maintain composure in stressful situations. Computer, numerical skills, Unisolv, and SAP proficiency.


Special Conditions of Employment: Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council, able and willing to work retail hours, work in controlled temperature environments, ensure security, operate in limited space, prioritize health and safety, and maintain risk stock.
