We are currently seeking a dedicated, clinically proficient, and service-oriented Medical Officer - Geriatric & Primary Care Services to join our esteemed team, working across Heritage Manor and Bridgewater Manor in Somerset West. This role involves providing medical care to long-term healthcare patients and those residing independently within our retirement villages.
This position is tailored for a doctor who thrives on fostering enduring relationships with patients, residents, and their families. It entails the provision of continuous care, managing a diverse array of healthcare needs associated with aging. Unlike a conventional high-volume practice, this role offers the opportunity to develop profound familiarity with your patients and residents, monitor their healthcare progression over time, and offer proactive medical support as their requirements evolve.
You will be privy to a broad spectrum of healthcare requirements, encompassing geriatric medicine, chronic disease management, preventative healthcare, primary care, and multidisciplinary care planning. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with nursing staff, allied healthcare professionals, care teams, and village management across Heritage Manor and Bridgewater Manor, ensuring our long-term patients and village residents receive proactive, comprehensive, and top-tier medical care.
Key Responsibilities - Conduct medical consultations and manage ongoing clinical care for long-term healthcare patients and retirement village residents - Schedule and manage consultation and clinic sessions across Heritage Manor and Bridgewater Manor - Independently coordinate patient and resident consultations, reviews, and follow-ups within the facility environment - Manage acute and chronic medical conditions across long-term healthcare and retirement village settings - Provide ongoing medical oversight and clinical support for long-term healthcare patients, addressing alterations in condition and evolving care needs - Implement preventative healthcare and wellness-focused interventions - Participate in multidisciplinary care planning and clinical discussions for long-term healthcare patients - Ensure precise clinical coding and billing practices for all services rendered - Keep accurate, compliant, and up-to-date clinical documentation - Collaborate closely with nursing teams, allied healthcare professionals, care teams, and village management - Offer support for continuity of care and facilitate necessary referrals - Facilitate family communication and care planning discussions when required - Uphold ethical, patient-centered, and evidence-based clinical practice
Requirements - Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) - Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification - Short courses in Geriatric Medicine or Elderly Care (advantageous) - Palliative Care training or certification (advantageous) - Proven post-community service experience - Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) - Previous experience in primary healthcare, family medicine, geriatrics, rehabilitation, or long-term care (advantageous) - Experience working within multidisciplinary healthcare environments (advantageous) - Exposure to retirement village, frail care, long-term healthcare, or elderly patient care (beneficial) - Strong communication and relationship-building skills - Comfortable working independently within a structured healthcare framework - Strong organizational and time management abilities - Capacity to manage multiple patients, scheduled consultations, follow-ups, and continuity of care effectively - High level of professionalism, clinical accountability, and attention to detail - Compassionate and patient-focused approach to care - Genuine interest in working with older adults and fostering long-term patient relationships

Specific Requirements - Valid driverās license and reliable transportation is mandatory - Willingness to travel between Heritage Manor and Bridgewater Manor when operationally required - Clear criminal and credit record - Two written references from your most recent employer
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 08h00 - 17h00 with 2 weekend days per month
The primary focus of this position will be providing medical care to long-term healthcare patients and retirement village residents across Heritage Manor and Bridgewater Manor. The successful candidate will also be required to assist within the Subacute environment for approximately two weekend days per month. Occasional additional Subacute locum assistance may be necessary from time to time, contingent on operational requirements.
